Background

Background

In a groundbreaking collaboration, LiveU, Orange Belgium, Atmosfair, ID2Move and Dreamwall transformed live sports broadcasting by delivering a fully remote, cloud-based production of the International Belgian Judo Open competition.

The International Belgian Judo Open is a marquee event on the European judo circuit, attracting competitors from around the world. With traditional broadcasting facing challenges such as extensive travel, high equipment costs, and logistical complexities, a new approach was essential to meet the growing expectations of modern sports audiences.

The Challenge

Leveraging 5G and a remote production workflow, the aim was to produce the most engaging, immersive live sports event with minimum costs and resources on-site. The production team had to ensure seamless connectivity and reliable, high-quality video feeds from remote locations while integrating dynamic visual elements. Ensuring a streamlined workflow, with sustainable practices, was also a key factor.

The Solution:

LiveU and Orange Belgium joined forces to implement a PoC that utilized a state-of-the-art 5G standalone network slice, guaranteeing dedicated bandwidth for uninterrupted transmission. Using LiveU’s Lightweight Sports Production, it represents the latest use case tested by the two companies. By integrating LiveU’s cutting-edge encoders – including the LU800 5G multi-cam and compact LU300S – with the LU-Smart mobile app and LiveU Studio’s cloud-native production service, the team established a streamlined remote production workflow.

The production leveraged LiveU Studio’s latest story-centric capabilities, such as instant replay, as well as remote guests and commentaries.  Real-time augmented reality graphics, provided by Dreamwall, were seamlessly integrated via the cloud, enhancing the live broadcast with engaging visual elements. This innovative setup connected three distinct locations: the competition venue, a central production studio, and Dreamwall’s facilities, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality production.

“Leveraging the benefits of 5G standalone technology allows Orange Belgium to expand the possibilities within the broadcasting sector while enhancing productivity, security, and sustainability. The implementation and continuous upgrade of our network have made this project possible.”
